Demarco Flamenco
Who is Demarco, the flamenco singer that has racked up thousands of ‘YouTube’ views?
For those who still don’t know Demarco Flamenco’s story, it began 40 years ago in Utrera when he was just Marcos Borrego López, a boy who sang with ease at family gatherings. His friends were his first followers. Music, since childhood, has been his great passion. He is the son of Marcos, a professional musician who instilled an unconditional love for this art form in the boy.
As an adult, he created and hummed verses to himself, with no pen or paper in the butane delivery truck he worked from for more than a decade. These verses would later become songs, just for fun, in the privacy of his own home. One day, he decided to share his songs with the world. He posted them online, and the floodgates opened: Demarco Flamenco was born.
He soon signed with the multinational Warner Music to release his first record -Uno- that earned him dizzying numbers: more than 180K followers on Instagram, a million monthly listeners on Spotify, a gold record for physical sales, and a platinum record for digital sales, among other triumphs. Yet his crowning achievement is a loyal audience that has been with him at some 200 concerts that he has played in just two years, singing his hits and waxing emotional with his melodies.
The musician’s story continues today with his new record: ‘Le sonrío al agua’ (Warner Music) produced by Gustavo Olmedo. In this latest work, Demarco proves he is an artist with staying power. He steps forward onto the music scene with the stage experience he has earned in recent years, without losing the essence of his origins. He is consolidating his career by combining the best of his beginnings -flamenco, light, catchy melodies, universal emotions- with something new: a combination of flamenco and modern music styles, more nuances, and the sound of a complete band. His new songs were mostly crafted in the early hours of the morning in the privacy of his own home, in a hotel room, or in a van on the way back from a concert. These experiences are felt in his lyrics.
Demarco Flamenco le sonríe al agua (smiles at water) when he thinks about making his father’s dream come true, about his daughter, his biggest fan, about each person who enjoys his songs. Marcos was a boy with no set plan about making it in music, but without seeking it out, forged a creative river that doesn’t dry up, flowing out towards an infinite sea.
